The Story of Faith and Fortitude

Scotland – Faith and Fortitude is about a harsh land that spawned a culture of hearty endurance, strong faith, and the fortitude to survive. We experience a sense of solitude looking across vast landscapes and historic castles. The stark landscape gives us insight into the generations of people who struggled against the elements to survive. A people who fought to protect their land, honor, and religion. The timeless monochromatic imagery amplifies the feeling of solitude. As we stand looking across miles and miles of undeveloped land, we are able to experience the same visions as the people who came here, fought, conquered, and died for centuries.

About the Table Top Gallery

Scotland – Faith and Fortitude is a Table Top Gallery Exhibition; not a photobook. At first glance, you may think it is a book because it is assembled with a binding but that is where the similarities end. Images in the gallery are actual photographs (chromogenic prints) produced on light sensitive paper. Each photograph is mounted on a piece of mylar to provide a rigid base or “exhibition wall” that exhibits each photograph on a table top. Each wall is assembled into a lay-flat leporello structure and bound inside an embossed, genuine leather case. The leporello sequences the visitor’s experience “walking through the gallery” to structure a visual narrative. The gallery is packaged in an acid free archival box for storage and protection. Collectors may choose to exhibit their table top gallery using a stand, opening the exhibit to different walls as their mood or interests change.

Different Types of Prints

Photobooks are typically produced either as a giclee print using an inkjet printer to spray ink onto a paper or as an offset print (aka CMYK prints) using a printing press with four colors of ink (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). Generally speaking, giclee prints are considered much higher quality than offset prints because the printers use many different inks to get more precise color and gradients. Giclee prints are produced in small quantities and are more expensive that CMYK prints. CMYK prints are typical in large production runs of mass produced and mass marketed books which makes them much less expensive on a per unit basis. Chromogenic digital prints are considered the highest quality prints for photography because of their extremely smooth “continuous tone” gradations. They are produced with a high resolution laser light source onto light sensitive paper and developed using the same chemistry as film based prints made with an enlarger.

Books vs Leporellos

Books are typically produced with a glued or stitched binding that requires each page to fold open. In a typical book images do not span across the full page spread because much of the image gets lost in the seam and is difficult to align. A leporello is like an accordion; the spreads lay flat and are composed of a single sheet of paper. Some leporellos are a continuous sheet of photographic folded like an accordion and glued together to bind the spreads. The table top gallery takes this concept once step farther by mounting each spread to a rigid hinged sheet of mylar for exceptional stability and lay-flat characteristics.
