A New View of Provence

Made during an artist residency in Beaumont-du-Pertuis in July 2026, this portfolio presents the Luberon through a distinctive infrared-inspired lens. Using a modified full-spectrum camera fitted with an Iridium filter, Sam Dobrow blends infrared light with narrow bands of visible color to transform familiar landscapes and village architecture into vivid, surreal scenes.

A Summer Palette

Across 16 curated images, the region appears in a warm, glowing palette of saturated color. Sunlit buildings, rural landscapes, and villages are rendered with an otherworldly intensity, while the photographs remain rooted in the character of Provence. Created during summer, when lavender was in full bloom, the series reflects both the season’s rich color and the artist’s interest in the places and atmosphere that have drawn painters to the region.

Following Van Gogh’s Footsteps

Dobrow’s exploration was shaped by the Luberon’s artistic history, particularly the artists who lived and worked in Provence. A longtime admirer of Vincent van Gogh, he sought out places connected to the artist’s life and work, including St-Rémy and the asylum where Van Gogh stayed for a year. Several photographs were made near locations associated with his paintings.

An Invitation to Explore

The result is a personal visual journey through Luberon villages and landscapes: part travel portrait, part experiment in color and light. The images invite viewers to experience Provence in a new way—and perhaps to explore its villages, landscapes, and distinctive way of life for themselves.
