Oceana: A Surreal Reimagining of Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive
Oceana is a surreal exploration of Miami Beach’s iconic Ocean Drive, reimagined through a lens that distorts the familiar into a dreamlike realm where alternate worlds breathe and shimmer beneath neon-lit skies. The portfolio emerged from a fascination with the unique Art Deco architecture that lines this legendary stretch, particularly at night when vibrant neon hues bathe geometric forms in an otherworldly glow. This glowing canvas begged to be disrupted—straight lines morphed into flowing organic shapes, architectural boundaries melted and blurred, inviting the viewer to journey beyond the physical and into the imaginative.
Influences from Surrealism and Impressionism
At the heart of these images lies a dialogue between reality and surrealism, influenced by the hallmarks of great artists who dared to alter perception. The melting buildings draw direct inspiration from Salvador Dali’s evocative, surreal paintings, where form is elastic and time feels suspended. These structures unfold like liquid dreams, a symbolic echo of the fragility and fluidity of memory and experience. Complementing this are the starry skies—an homage to Vincent Van Gogh’s deep, swirling nightscapes—yet these skies are reimagined with misplaced stars that hint at the presence of alien life merging seamlessly with the distorted, whimsical humanoid figures inhabiting these scenes. These creatures, with their distorted heads and playful, Dr Seuss-esque bodies, add a layer of childlike wonder and subliminal whimsy while underscoring a subtle yet profound commentary on identity and difference.

The depictions evoke the hazy, fragmented memories of nights spent wandering the Art Deco District, where the familiar becomes suggestive of deeper, hidden narratives.
