Its a Great Invitation

About two years ago, I received an invitation to enter photography competitions on the Biafarin platform. Since Biafarin does not require fees to participate in their contests, I decided to sign up for a free account and enter a few contests. I was pleasantly rewarded with a couple of winning entries, so I continued to participate in various contests where I felt my photography was suited to the competition.

Worthy Competitions

Usually, the competitions result in recognition, certificates, and website promotions but this one competition was a bit different. It placed an emphasis on both the image and the artist statement and it had a cash prize as the top award. Needless to say, I was elated to get an email this week notifying me that I was one of the three recipients of the cash award of $1000. At first I was skeptical, was someone trying to scam me. But no, the email only asked for my PayPal email address to make the payment and it came from a real person’s email at the biafarin.com domain. During the one year competition, my page had over 77,000 unique visitors and over 400 ratings had resulted in 4.98/5.00 score, meaning most of the visitors rated the page at the highest five star rating.

An Improved Artist Statement

In addition to a generous cash grant, this competition helped me refine my artist statement. Since the competition stated that the artist statement would be equally weighted with the imagery, it pushed me to really think through the words I needed to express my passion and motivation to create art. Some of the tips encouraged me to reach deep inside and pull out my emotions for the world to see. I think that exercise improved my artist statement and also gave me clarity in my pursuits.
