Salvador Dali has long fascinated me with his surrealistic landscapes though I never contemplated creating a tribute to him — until now.
While I was traveling in Morocco I came across this building with layers of plaster peeling off. As I looked at the particular shapes and textures, I had this feeling of being drawn into a Dali nightmare. There was this certain type of surrealism in the reality in front of me. I took the picture and appropriately named it “Inside a Dali Nightmare” but this was not enough. There was something more to this picture that had not yet been exposed. I kept looking at it and seeing more than met the eye. Finally, I decided to develop the image, to take it far into the surreal. Textures had to be enhanced. Colors had to be made vivid. Solids needed to melt. Reality had to fade into surreality so I created “We Are Not Alone”.
We Are Not Alone might be interpreted in a Dali nightmare as a paranoid fear of being watched, unable to escape the peering eyes of something out there in the dark. But that is not what is intended here. We Are Not Alone is meant to inspire the thought that we are so small in this huge universe and there very likely is life out there in the starry sky.
The works of Vincent Van Gogh have also been an influence in my art. Van Gogh’s use of color and texture in his paintings has always amazed me. Many of my photographic images are abstracted with highly saturated colors and textures as a tribute to the genius of Van Gogh. The saturated colors and textures in We Are Not Alone further attest to his influence on my work.
We Are Not Alone is printed approximately 18″ x 28″ on metallic paper and face-mounted on acrylic to provide a large gamut of deep colors and high contrast. Unframed with hanging system.
