Sam Dobrow’s Kolmanskop portfolio offers a striking new way to see this abandoned town. Using a full-spectrum-modified camera and an Iridium filter, Dobrow blends infrared with narrow bands of visible light to create colors beyond ordinary human vision. He then reshapes each photograph into an otherworldly scene: rooms overtaken by sand, corridors that seem to lead elsewhere, and doorways that invite the imagination to cross the threshold.
These images are more than a record of a ghost town. They open onto the world of Ghost Town: The Untold Story of Kolmanskop, Dobrow’s book combining 47 surreal photographs with a science-fiction novella. In its pages, doors speak and ghosts offer riddles. Nyxine, a shape-shifting saloon owner, slips through time, while the rogue Blade faces a dangerous bargain over glowing crystals that were never diamonds at all. A date appears in a window before it has happened, and Kolmanskop’s familiar history gives way to a darker mystery.
Welcome to my world of fine art photography. Please take your time and browse through my many galleries. I have a diverse collection of beautiful photographic art. All my artwork begins in the camera before making its journey through my imagination where I process the image into something beautiful and sometimes quite surreal.
