See The Legend of Trumpan Church (24×32) by Sam Dobrow at Miami Spectrum 2019The Legend of Trumpan Church
The Legend of Trumpan Church (above) is a surreal work of art based upon a photograph of the historic church on the Isle of Skye which stands as a monument to Scotland’s barbarian history.
During the 1500’s, two clans, the MacDonalds and the MacLeods were engaged in fierce rivalry. This rivalry eventually led to brutal massacres by both clans. In 1577, the raiding MacLeods of Skye landed on the isle of Eigg chasing the MacDonalds to a cave. The MacLeods set a fire at the mouth of the cave causing all 395 MacDonalds to be suffocated.
Seeking revenge, on the first Sunday in May 1578, the Clan MacDonald of Uist set sail for Skye in eight war berlinns (ships). Arriving at the Trumpan village where the residents were gathered in church, the MacDonalds barred the church door and set fire to the thatched roof killing all the worshipers except for a young girl who managed to escape out the small window. The girl ran ten miles to Dunvegan alerting fellow MacLeods who gathered together to battle the retreating MacDonalds whose ships had been hopelessly grounded by the changing tide.
All of the MacDonalds were slaughtered. Their bodies were piled high next to a stone wall (dyke) which was pushed over to expedite the mass burial. Consequently, this legend is also know as The Battle of the Spoiling of the Dyke.
The village of Trumpan was never rebuilt. The brave young girl remains a heroine in Gaelic lore.
Several works from the Mystic Collection, including The Legend Of Trumpan Church, will be on exhibit (booth S616) at Spectrum Miami 2019. You can purchase a ready to hang, limited edition giclee print of The Legend Of Trumpan Church (24×32) face-mounted on acrylic glass for $2550 at the show or in the Mystic Gallery.
The Mystic Collection
Aphrodite, Psyche, Cleopatra, Delilah, Helen of Troy, Sappho, and Mata Hari come to mind as powerful female characters of history and mythology. These strong women are frequently characterized having hypnotic beauty as the power over their physically stronger, but vulnerable, male counterparts. Sometimes these women are heroes and sometimes villains.
Works from the Mystic Collection depict strong female characters with mystery and beauty in a surreal world. These works transform photographs of our world into other-worldly places. Visual stories are created by blending multiple photographs; including nude models, astronomical images, wildlife, and digital art compositions. The central characters in the Mystic Collection are women of surreal tantalizing beauty.
