Artreprenuer just announced the winners for its open call, “A Black and White Affair”. Sam Dobrow submitted his breathtaking photograph from Scotland’s Isle of Skye for the competition and was selected as the First Prize Winner in Photography.
From the Artreprenuer Announcement:
???? WINNER ???? in photography for “A BLACK & WHITE AFFAIR” Open Call goes to Sam Dobrow for ‘Quiraing, Isle of Skye, Scotland’! Quiraing is an area on a landslip on the eastern face of Meall Na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
The fertile abundance of this land produces such rich contrast, striking even in shades of grey. The texture of the clouds above and rock formations below are so visually stunning, the landscape captured here looks like a whole other planet.
About the Contest
The open call invited artists in several disciplines to submit their black and white artwork for consideration.
Whether it’s used as symbolism, metaphor, or the absence of light, using black and white makes a bold statement. For this CURATED Open Call ‘A Black & White Affair’ ????????, we want to see artwork you’ve created that uses black, white, and all the shades of grey, in unique and interesting ways.
We are giving away $1200 in awards; Pamela Jean Tinnen of New York University’s Art in Public Places will select the best in theme (and provide portfolio reviews for the best in the show!)
Submission deadline: June 8th, 2020.
Disciplines included in the open call are:
- Graphic Design
- Mixed Media
All the winning entries can be found on the Artreprenuer website. Select “A Black and White Affair” from the drop down menu for open call winners.

About Sam Dobrow
Sam Dobrow is a contemporary photographic artist who lives and works in the artist village of Coconut Grove, Florida. In the digital darkroom, Sam continues to test the boundaries of photography. All of his artwork begins in the camera and evolves into images with intensely beautiful constructs amplified by his emotions and perceptions of the world and its inhabitants. Whether it is a street scene, portrait or figurative works, Sam captures beauty by presenting subjects shaped by light, framed by strong graphical elements, and emotionally supercharged by the thoughtful choice of color.
According to Sam, the art of photography begins with a feeling, followed by seeing through the camera with anticipation, and ultimately developing an image that speaks to that feeling.
